Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister: Astana negotiations on Syria are not an alternative to Geneva negotiations

Kazakhstani Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tileuberdi said: “Astana process is not an alternative to Geneva negotiations concerning Syria, but a complement to it”.

These press statements of the Kazakhstani Foreign Minister were reported by the Russian news agency “TASS”.

The minister added: “Astana process is an addition to Geneva process, and does not compete with the Geneva talks in any way. The guarantor countries of Astana process (Russia, Turkey, and Iran) have not yet submit an application in order to hold a new round of Astana negotiations in Nur Sultan.

Ambassador Richard Mills U.S. Deputy Representative to the United Nations has previously accused Russia of holding responsibility for disrupting the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee for reasons not related to Syria during a session of the UN Security Council, stressing the need to immediately resume the committee’s meetings.

It is noteworthy that the final statement of the meeting of the Special Envoys to Syria in Geneva called for a political solution to the crisis in Syria in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254, the ongoing support for the ceasefire in the country, the continuous support for the “Syrian Constitutional Committee”, conducting free and fair elections, terminating the arbitrary arrest, and releasing all the Syrian detainees.
