“Save the Children” Organization: Thousands of children in Syria are at risk of contracting cholera

“Save the Children” organization expressed its concern over cholera outbreak in Syria and the neighboring countries.

The organization said that thousands of children in Syria and the neighboring countries are at risk from cholera disease due to contaminated water and food irrigated by the Euphrates River.

The organization’s Regional Health Advisor for the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe, Ibrahim Shihab, said that “cholera outbreak could be a catastrophe for the region as the medical infrastructure and sanitation are already fragile, he also warned that children are particularly at risk from cholera outbreak.”

He added that “in Syria approximately 35% of cases are among those under the age of 10,” pointing out that cholera could have a very negative impact on the pregnant women and children below the age of five, who suffer from other disease, malnutrition, and lack of access to quality health care.

The United Nations has warned earlier in a statement from the rapid spread of cholera epidemic in all Syria and called for providing $34.4 million for a three-month cholera response plan.

The Early Warning Alert and Response Network announced on Friday the registration of 14 cholera new cases in northwestern Syria during the last 24 hours.
