The Syrian Civil Defense announces new cholera cases in northwestern Syria

The Syrian Civil Defense Organization (White Helmets) announced on Saturday that the cholera cases increased to 247, and cholera deaths to 6 in northwestern Syria.

The Syrian Civil Defense Organization issued a statement on its official Facebook account in which it affirmed that its teams are working to transfer the suspected and cholera cases to hospitals and specialized health centers.

The statement pointed out that most cholera cases responded by the Civil Defense during the last two weeks were children, and they were transferred to health centers to take the necessary measures and tests.

The Civil Defense added that the cholera disease spreads rapidly and poses a threat to people’s life due to fragile infrastructure and medical sector and the huge shortage of the necessities of life.

The United Kingdom confirmed that it will provide new support to UNICEF in response to the cholera outbreak in Syria, pointing out that it will continue to work to ensure a coordinated response on the ground.

The United Kingdom will provide two million pounds (about $ 2.25 million) to UNICEF to curb cholera outbreak, which in turn will work to provide vital life-saving assistance in the affected areas, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth, and Development.

The statement pointed out that “while the international community expands its response to the outbreak, which has now spread in Lebanon, this funding will contribute to UNICEF’s response to cholera, including the establishment of treatment centers, providing access to health groups, and training the public on how to prevent its spread.”

The statement stressed that the United Kingdom “has not forgotten Syria, and will continue to work with international partners to ensure a coordinated response on the ground.”
