Pedersen in Damascus to discuss ways to revive the political track

Al-Watan newspaper, which is close to the Assad regime, said: “The UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, discussed in Damascus during his meeting with the Foreign Minister of the Assad regime, Faisal al-Mekdad, ways to revive the political track.”

The newspaper added that “Pederson presented a report to the UN Security Council last Tuesday about the reality on the Syrian ground and made a presentation on the possibilities of military escalation in northern Syria, and asked all parties to calm down, reduce escalation and restore calm to Syria.”

Pedersen pointed out during his meeting with al-Mekdad: “There are about 15 million Syrians who are now in need of humanitarian aid, and this is unacceptable, therefore I say that the continuation of the situation as it is in Syria is something that does not serve anyone’s interest.”

Pedersen pointed to the need to discuss all these issues, in addition to the affairs of the internally displaced and the refugees outside the country.

Pedersen also discussed during his meeting with al-Mekdad the situation of the missing and detainees, pointing out that there are several issues related to Syria that we need to reach a solution.

It is noteworthy that Pedersen visited Damascus on the 17th of last October, with the aim of discussing the revival of the Constitutional Committee and his plan with the Foreign Minister of the Assad regime, after holding talks with the negotiating committee.
