Turkish Defence Minister: We are in talks with Russia about the upcoming military operation in northern Syria

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar announced in a news conference that “Ankara is in talks with Moscow about the upcoming Turkish military operation in northern Syria against the Syrian Democratic Forces.”

Akar said that “Turkey is in talks with Russia to use the airspace above northern Syria for a potential cross-border operation against the Syrian Democratic Forces.”

Akar stressed “his country’s aspirations to implement the provisions of the memorandum of understanding signed with Moscow in October 2019 regarding the organizations of the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party in Syria.”

Turkey has carried out several incursions into northern Syria against the Syrian Democratic Forces, and has been threatening to launch a new attack for months.

It is noteworthy that last November, Turkey launched airstrikes on targets of the Syrian Democratic Forces, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signalled a possible ground offensive.
