Greek Foreign Ministry: We proposed to Pedersen to host a series of discussions on Syria between accredited Ambassadors

Greek Foreign Affairs Minister Nikos Dendias tweeted that he proposed to the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Syria, Geir Pedersen, to hold a series of discussions on Syria, including accredited ambassadors and envoys to Syria for three days in Greece.

This statement came while Dendias had a phone call with Pedersen last Tuesday, and he made it clear that he also discussed with him the situation in Syria.

Greece announced in May 2020 the re-appointment of the former ambassador to Damascus as a special envoy for Syrian affairs residing in Beirut, after Athens severed its relations with the Assad regime since 2012.

Greek media considered at that time that this step means that Greece would start normalizing its relations with the Assad regime, and that it was only a matter of time before the Greek embassy in Damascus was officially reopened.

The Greek minister has previously confirmed that Athens is committed to the decisions of the European Union to see concrete steps from the Assad regime to provide funds for the reconstruction of Syria, political transition, full respect for human rights, and accountability for war crimes.
