UN: Russia is responsible for the suspension of humanitarian aid delivery to Syria

The US Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfeld, said during a Security Council session on Syria that “Russia is responsible for halting UN cross-border humanitarian aid deliveries into northwestern Syria, due to its refusal to negotiate in good faith and its use of its veto power.”

Greenfield added that “The Assad regime’s announcement of allowing aid delivery through Bab al-Hawa border crossing for six months constitutes an acknowledgment of the need to provide aid, but it included unacceptable restrictions, and its duration is less than the necessary period.”

Greenfield emphasized that “The cross-border aid delivery must include five main elements, including independence, response to all of Syria, non-interference of the Assad regime, granting access for the longest possible period, and monitoring.”

The President of the United Nations General Assembly had criticized Russia’s use of its veto in the Security Council on a draft Brazilian-Swiss resolution on renewing the aid delivery mechanism into northwestern Syria via Bab al-Hawa crossing.
