Aboul Gheit: The meeting of the Ministerial Liaison Committee on Syria was “serious and constructive”

The Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, confirmed that Arab League’s liaison committee on Syria in Cairo “was serious and fruitful”.

Aboul Gheit stated following his participation in the meeting that “we will continue the work with the blessing of our member countries to achieve the desired progress in the various issues for the interest of Syria and its dear people.”

Aboul Gheit considered that this meeting constituted a significant dialogue with Assad regime’s foreign minister, Faisal al-Mikdad.

The Arab summit assigned the Liaison Committee to pursue Arab engagement to solve the Syrian crisis in light of the commitments included in “Amman statement”.

The spokesman for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Jamal Rushdi, said: “The Liaison Committee met according to a decision issued by the Council of the Arab League last May and included 6 Arab countries in addition to the Secretary-General of the Arab League.”

Rushdi emphasized that “holding the Liaison Committee reflects the seriousness of Arab countries in playing a main role to solve the Syrian crisis and dealing with the serious repercussions resulting from it such as the danger of producing and smuggling drugs, terrorist threats, and humanitarian problems on the top of which is the refugees issue.”

The final statement of the Cairo meeting stressed the importance of creating a platform to register refugees’ names who wish to return to Syria, in coordination with the host countries and relevant United Nations bodies.

Egypt is witnessing urgent Arab movements and meetings to discuss many issues, starting Monday with a tripartite summit between the presidents of Egypt, Palestine, and the Jordan’s king in El Alamein, followed by new movements on Tuesday in Cairo, where the Minister of Assad regime Foreign Affairs, Faisal al-Mikdad, arrived in the Egyptian capital coinciding with the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosting Egyptian-Saudi-Iraqi-Jordanian consultations about Syria.
