The Ministry of Development and Humanitarian Affairs in Idleb expresses its concern over the “WFP” decision in Syria

The Ministry of Development and Humanitarian Affairs of the Syrian Salvation Government in Idleb expressed its concern over the decision of ending the WFP’s food program in north-west Syria since 31/1/2023.

The Ministry considered in its statement that this decision undermines the ethical and humanitarian responsibility of the WFP and disregards the humanitarian situation experienced by the civilians in the region, especially after the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023.

The Ministry called on the World Food Program to review the decision, and not to treat the northwestern region of Syria like other regions in the world for many reasons.

The Ministry made it clear that the most important reasons that make the region not like any other ones are: “the bitter humanitarian situation, forced displacement due to military attacks carried out by Assad regime forces and Russia on civilians, and the highly population density in a besieged area that does not have economic capabilities.

The Ministry affirmed in its statement its categorical rejection of the WFP’s suspension of its food programs in the region, or even reducing them.

The Ministry stressed the need for the WFP to assume its humanitarian and moral responsibility, continue its programs and work on future plans that guarantee appropriate alternatives to stopping food baskets in case it happens later.
