Lavrentiev: Russia rejects the Israeli attacks on Syria

Russia’s special envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev affirmed that Russia rejects the Israeli attacks on Syria as they lead to dragging the Arab countries into the conflict in the Middle East.

TASS Russian News Agency quoted Lavrentiev as saying: “Russia does not see an intention in the United Nations to withdraw its forces from Syria, and the US administration may realize later that preserving the US bases in Syria is not a priority for it.”

Lavrentiev made it clear that “the Israeli airstrikes on Iranian targets may increase, and we categorically reject this option to settle this issue because it only leads to escalating the violence.”

Lavrentiev pointed out that his country does not want to drag Assad regime into a regional conflict, and we will do everything in our power to prevent it.

Lavrentiev considered that the situation in Syria is now more complicated as the US suffers serious losses, but US continues to remain in Syria with huge numbers of forces and bases in northeastern Syria and in al-Tanf, south Syria.

The Israeli forces launched last Saturday, 20 January 2024, an attack targeting the Mazzeh area in central Damascus, killing 10 people, including 5 Iranian Revolutionary Guard advisors, and a number of Syrians.

It is noteworthy that the United States deploys about 900 military personnel in Syria, within the framework of the international coalition to combat ISIS, which was formed in 2014, in 28 positions, including 24 military bases and 4 points where there are US forces with allied forces, such as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
