UN: It is necessary to provide flexible and unearmarked funding including to the Syria Humanitarian Fund

The Deputy Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Syria, Najat Rushdi, declared that “we have to provide flexible, unearmarked funding to Syria, including Syria Humanitarian Fund because the situation is very dire on many fronts in Syria.”

Rushdi’s statement came during a meeting of Syria Humanitarian Task Force.

Rushdi said: “Without more funding, millions will face severe food insecurity and rising malnutrition rates.”

Rushdi added: “More than 8 million Syrians lack potable water and hundreds of camps in northwest Syria are deprived of water and sanitation due to funding shortages.”

Rushdi pointed out: “The support of the member states to provide cross-border humanitarian aid consistently and for the longest possible time is a necessary matter. It is also essential to use all methods.”

It is noteworthy that Syria Humanitarian Task Force was established to address urgent priorities related to the decision of the International Syria Support Group, to facilitate the implementation of paragraphs 12 and 13 of Security Council Resolution 2254, including lifting all sieges of civilians, obtaining sustainable and unhindered humanitarian access to the besieged and hard-to reach areas, and protecting civilians.
