Turkish official: More than 16 million Syrians are in need of humanitarian assistance
Turkey’s permanent Representative to the United Nations, the Ambassador Ahmed Yildiz, said on Monday that “16,7 million Syrians are in need of humanitarian assistance and the humanitarian situation in Syria is horrible and getting worse.”
Yildiz’s statement came during a UN Security Council session on the humanitarian and political situation in Syria.
Yildiz added: “The repercussions of the situation do not affect Syria only, but the region and beyond, explaining that the quarter of the population, who are in need of humanitarian assistance, live in northwest Syria.”
Yildiz warned against a new asylum movement and called for providing the sustainable fund, pointing out that his country will continue its cooperation with the United Nations regarding cross-border humanitarian aid.
Yildiz called on the international community to take urgent measures to reach a lasting solution to the conflict, taking into account the deteriorating situation in Syria.
He stressed the importance of resolving the conflict through an integrated vision with all political, security and humanitarian dimensions.
It is noteworthy that the regions of northern Syria suffer from a severe shortage of humanitarian aid, which negatively affects more than two million displaced people residing in the camps of Idleb and the Aleppo countryside, where they lack basic necessities such as food, water, and health care.
