Lavrov: We will discuss the latest developments in Syria within Astana next month

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov revealed in a press conference with his Iranian counterpart, Muhammad Javad Zarif, in Moscow, the intention of the guarantors of Astana (Russia-Iran-Turkey) to meet next February to discuss developments in the Syrian file.

Lavrov said that the meeting will be held in the Russian city of Sochi, between the three countries, to discuss the latest developments in the field and politics in Syria.

He added, “The meetings of the fifth round of the Syrian constitution drafting committee began, Monday, at the United Nations office in Geneva, Switzerland.”

He noted that representatives from Russia, Turkey and Iran participated in the meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Drafting Committee, in its second round.

The Russian minister’s announcement of the Astana guarantors ’desire to meet again to discuss the Syrian file came in conjunction with the holding of the work of the fifth round of the Constitutional Committee in Geneva.

Lavrov did not talk about the reasons for Astana’s guarantors to hold a new meeting, nor did he clarify whether the next meeting will be held at the level of presidents or foreign ministers.

The main objectives of establishing the Astana process were related to stabilizing the ceasefire and achieving progress in the political process towards the desired political solution between the opposition and the Assad regime, but the motives of each of the three countries (Turkey, Russia and Iran) were not one or the same.
