National Coalition: Any elections outside the content of International Resolution 2254 are illegal

The National Coalition announced in a press statement published on its official contacts on Sunday that the Assad regime and its allies are planning to stage elections in Syria, is an outright farce, and it called on the international community to take measures that force the Assad regime to enter into a real political solution.

In an exclusive interview with Fresh, Abdul Majid Barakat, a member of the political body of the coalition, said, “The Assad regime’s taking this step is a failed attempt to float itself on the internal and external levels, in order to show the signs of recovery and overcome the entitlements it suffers from.”

He indicated that the Assad regime is unable to overcome these requirements, especially with regard to the economic, humanitarian, military and security situation, and that it is trying to escape from these requirements in order to show a major aspect of recovery, which is the elections.

Al-Barakat emphasized that these elections are illegal at all levels, as the Assad regime will hold them only in its regions, and that it is lacking in terms of sovereignty, and that whoever gives the Assad regime the right to hold such elections is a partner in crimes against the Syrians.

Russia is trying to give legitimacy to the Assad regime by supporting elections, at a time when a member of the political body affirmed that there is an international rejection of it.

Al-Barakat indicated that any elections that take place in Syria outside the framework of international legitimacy and outside the content of international resolution 2254 are illegal elections, and that before any elections, they must be a safe environment, a transitional government, and a new constitution for Syria.

The head of the “People’s Assembly” of the Assad regime, Hammouda Sabbagh, announced yesterday, Sunday, the launch of what he called the presidential elections in Syria, and called on those wishing to run to present their papers, and the polling date was set for Wednesday, the 26th of next May.
