Pederson confirms that the United Nations is not involved in the elections for the Assad regime

The UN special envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, briefed the Security Council, to talk about the latest field and political developments in Syria.

Pederson said, “It must be stressed the need to deliver humanitarian aid to all regions in Syria,” expressing his concern about “the worsening economic crisis, as more than 12 million Syrians live below the poverty line.”

He added, “It is incumbent upon the Syrian parties to release the detainees and kidnapped persons in a manner commensurate with the scale of this tragedy.”

And he warned of the activities of the “Islamic State” organization in areas inside Syria, “The organization is strengthening its attacks in the center and the north-east of the country.”
Pederson made it clear that the United Nations is not involved in the presidential elections, which are being organized by the Assad regime in Syria.

On Wednesday, the constitutional deadline of ten days for submitting applications to run for the presidency of the republic in Syria, scheduled for May 26, expires, in an entitlement whose results appear to be pre-determined in favor of Bashar al-Assad.
