Pedersen announces his intention to participate in the Astana meetings this weekend

The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Syria, Geir Pedersen, announced his intention to participate in the upcoming meeting on Syria in the Astana format, according to a source in the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.

“The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Syria, Geir Pedersen, confirmed his participation in the next meeting,” the office said, noting that the city of Nur-Sultan will host on July 7 and 8 the 16th high-level international meeting of the Astana formula on Syria.

It is scheduled that delegations from the guarantor countries (Iran, Russia and Turkey), the Assad regime and the opposition, and as observers will participate in the event, representatives of the United Nations, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

Participants in the event will discuss the situation in Syria, international humanitarian aid, prospects for resuming the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva, and confidence-building measures, including prisoner exchange, and the release of detainees.

An official in the Russian Army’s General Staff had previously revealed the date for a new round of Astana negotiations on Syria, pointing out that it would take place in the Kazakh capital, Nur-Sultan, at a time when Russia is using these conferences to pass its projects, demands and political procrastination in the solution and circumvent society.
