Jeffrey calls on the Biden administration to show seriousness in putting pressure on Bashar al-Assad

The former US envoy to Syria, James Jeffrey, called on the administration of US President John Biden, to show seriousness in putting pressure on Bashar al-Assad, stressing that he had not seen any response regarding the Syrian issue so far.

In an interview with Al-Madar program on Al-Sharq channel, Jeffrey said that the previous US administration, led by Donald Trump, was able to stop the Assad regime’s offensive and military operations against civilians in all Syrian regions, through close cooperation with Israel, Turkey and the American forces present there.

He added that the massive sanctions imposed by the previous administration on the Assad regime were an important deterrent to its offensive operations, in addition to its mobilization of diplomatic action against it, to the point of going to Moscow and explaining how to solve this entire problem. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin did not go along with these efforts.

The former US envoy considered that “the mere fact that we have undertaken these efforts is evidence of our seriousness in putting pressure on the Assad regime,” adding: “This is what I urge the current administration to do, and so far I have not seen any response.”

Commenting on Bashar al-Assad’s victory in the recent presidential elections, he pointed out that the idea that Bashar al-Assad could claim victory in elections he organizes himself to guarantee his success is absurd.

He explained that half of the Syrians are outside the areas of the Assad regime, and that the Assad regime does not control 30% of Syria, and that the Turkish and American forces are deployed in and above his country, so he does not rise to the level of this war, and that Bashar al-Assad is not in a strong position.
