An Iraqi political source explained why his country did not invite Bashar al-Assad to attend the Neighborhood Summit, hosted by the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, noting, “The idea of ​​the conference is Iraqi-French, and French President Emmanuel Macron will attend it.”

The source explained, “Macron stipulated that Assad not be invited to the conference in order to make it a success,” noting that “his country agreed with the French desire not to embarrass the rest of the leaders.”

While the so-called “Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces” issued a statement, explaining that “the head of the crowd conveyed a message from Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi to Bashar Al-Ashd, explaining why he was not invited to participate in the regional neighborhood summit to be held at the end of thismonth.”

The message included, according to a statement by the “crowd”, “that the reason for not inviting al-Assad to attend the summit aims to make the conference a success and to seek solutions to the region’s problems with the participation of all countries neighboring Iraq.”

According to the statement, “the crisis situation in Syria is at the forefront of the problems that will be discussed,” and that Iraq’s refusal to extend an invitation to Bashar al-Assad does not reflect the Iraqi government’s disregard for the “brotherly” government of the Assad regime.

For its part, the “Presidency of the Syrian Republic” claimed that Bashar al-Assad received a message from the Iraqi Prime Minister transmitted by the head of the “Iraqi Mobilization Forces,” adding that the message centered on the summit that Iraq will host at the end of this month, and the importance of joint coordination between the two sides, while it was not mentioned.

Earlier this week, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry confirmed its denial of an official invitation to Bashar al-Assad to attend the summit, which will be hosted by the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, at the end of this month.
During the past few days, the Iraqi government extended official invitations to the leaders of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE and Iran, with the aim of participating in the summit that the country will host at the end of this month.
