Washington: We support the negotiations of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in accordance with Resolution 2254

The United States confirmed its support for the negotiations of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, which began its work on Monday in Geneva.

US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Ethan Goldrich, said in a meeting with the co-chair of the Syrian Constitutional Committee on behalf of the opposition delegation, Hadi al-Bahra, that Washington “supports the negotiations of the Syrian Constitutional Committee to advance the political process led by the Syrians as set out in Security Council Resolution No. 2254”.

Goldrich, who is attending the committee’s meetings in Geneva, reiterated Washington’s strong support for the work of the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, “to advance a Syrian-led political solution to the conflict, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254,” according to a tweet posted by Washington’s embassy in Syria on Twitter.

On Monday, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said that Washington welcomes the start of the sixth round of talks between the Assad regime and the Syrian opposition.

“It is essential that the Assad regime and the Syrian opposition engage constructively in Geneva in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 on Syria,” Price added.

Yesterday, Monday, the work of the first session of the sixth round of of the Syrian Constitutional Committee discussions, which was held in Geneva to discuss the basic principles of the constitution, was concluded.
