The United States: We will not support efforts to normalize or rehabilitate Bashar al-Assad

US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Ambassador Barbara Leaf confirmed that the United States would not support any efforts to normalize or rehabilitate “Bashar al-Assad” and called for the Assad regime to be held accountable for its crimes, saying: “They must and will be held accountable.”

She tweeted: “I want to be clear on what we have not done in Syria, and what we will not do, which is: support efforts to normalize or rehabilitate Bashar al-Assad in any way.”

She explained that “the United States will not lift sanctions on the Assad regime or change its position opposing reconstruction in Syria until there is authentic, enduring progress towards a political solution.”

She pointed out that “Bashar al-Assad and the coterie around him remain the single and largest impediment to the political solution.”

The United States of America has previously said that its policies have not changed towards Bashar al-Assad, and he has done nothing to restore his legitimacy that he has lost a long time ago.

At the beginning of this month, the US announced that holding Bashar al-Assad accountable has begun due to the violations he committed against Syrians over the past 11 years.
