Despite international denunciations, the Assad regime launches the so-called “presidential elections” in the areas it controls

The Assad regime’s presidential elections began today, Wednesday, May 26, with the participation of a number of officials, students, employees and members of the Assad regime’s forces, while the regime’s media intensified coverage of the so-called “ballot boxes”.

Media newspapers published scenes of filming the elections in the universities of Al-Baath, Tishreen, Damascus and Aleppo, where the administrations of all educational government departments of the Assad regime were informed of the necessity for students to attend under pain of final dismissal.

The media newspapers published pictures of the election scenes that were launched in the areas controlled by the Assad regime, while ignoring the internal and external rejection of this farce, which it insisted on holding despite its illegality, continues to broadcast pictures and videos of it, trying to amplify the participation it has been mobilizing for through various tools for a long time.

It was clear that the momentum was more in the coastal regions, being the main popular incubator for the Assad regime, as most of the polling stations in the rest of the Syrian regions witnessed a very weak turnout, especially in the governorates of Daraa, Al-Suwayda, Raqqa, Hasaka, Deir Ezzor and Homs.

The capital, Damascus, also witnessed a low turnout in many polling stations scattered, as well as in the countryside of Damascus, as some towns did not exceed 100 people.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights stated that these elections are only taking place within about 60% of the area of ​​Syria, that is, within the areas controlled by the Syrian regime through its security apparatus, which practiced brutal torture for ten years, and terror guarantees it a winning victory.

The number of residents in the Assad regime-controlled areas ranges between 5.5 to 6 million Syrian citizens, which is less than a quarter of the Syrian people, considering that there are 13 million internally displaced persons and refugees according to the High Commissioner for Refugees, and about 4 million in northwestern Syria, and between 1.5 to 2 million in northeast Syria.
The Assad regime had launched what it said was the media center for covering its alleged presidential elections at the Ministry of Information building, Al-Baath House in Damascus, while its official media reported several statements, including the numbers of those who are allowed to participate in these elections, which they began this morning.
