Hebrew newspaper: Israel does not welcome the Russian shift towards acquiescence to Iranian desires in Daraa

The Hebrew newspaper, “The Jerusalem Post,” said that the Daraa events are important to Israel, because they are on the border with the Golan Heights and a strategic location for the establishment of Iranian forces in the region, to be used for any possible confrontation between Israel and Iran.

The newspaper added, in a report, that the apparent Russian shift toward acquiescence to the Iranian desires reflected in the Daraa agreement would not be welcome in Israel.
She pointed out that Russia’s objection to the Israeli strikes against Iranian targets in Syria is an indication that strikes Israel’s hopes that Russia will play a role in limiting Iran’s influence in Syria, calling on the Israeli government to review it.

The newspaper considered that the Assad regime’s recent attack on Daraa constituted a direct Iranian attempt to challenge the Russian project in Daraa. However, Russia abandoned its ambiguity about Daraa, and confirmed that it would support the regime in its war if the opposition fighters did not agree to the regime’s demands.

She believed that the recent events in Daraa reflect the growing Iranian confidence, which appears to stem from the erosion of Russia’s commitment to the status quo.She explained that the reason for this clear shift in Russia’s position is less clear, but the trend seems clear, suggesting that the sense of American weakness in the region also contributes to Iranian boldness, and Russia’s disregard for the concerns of local allies of the United States.

The Jerusalem Post concluded that the result would be more progress for Iranian interests in southwestern Syria, noting that “this interest is woven into the crumbling structures of the Assad regime.
It represents ambitions, strategy, and priorities established in Tehran, not in Damascus. It currently extends all the way to the border with Israel.
