Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said, if the right of Russia and the United States to enter Syria is recognized, Turkey also has the same right.
This came in statements to the German magazine “Der Spiegel” published yesterday, in which he indicated that he did not expect the West to send forces to the region in order to protect the opposition in Idlib, Syria.
He added, “This is out of the question, and we proposed in 2015, 2016 and 2017, the establishment of a safe zone. If a no-fly zone had been declared for that period, this number of those who had to leave Syria would not have been, as this opportunity was lost.”
And he indicated that some European friends criticize Turkey for deploying forces in Syria, saying: “Although this should satisfy them, we have to keep people in the areas under our control, as 2.5 million people do not leave the area with the presence of Turkish soldiers in Idlib.”
He explained that his country’s friends in the West are behaving as if Turkey is an occupying power (in Syria), stressing that Ankara did not covet the territory of Syria, but it was forced to take this step for its own security and the security of the Syrians in the region.
They said that Turkey received sanctions instead of thanks, because it harmed the presence of the Syrian Democratic Forces in the region.He rejected Turkey’s allegations of violating international law in Syria, stressing that those violating international law are the Assad regime and the Syrian Democratic Forces.
He called on the international community to pressure the Assad regime more to comply with the political solution, adding: “Russia and Iran think differently on this issue, but Assad has now lost all his legitimacy.”
