Putin will meet Jordan’s King Abdullah II on August 23 to discuss the Syrian file

Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, who is expected to visit Russia on August 23, Yuri Ushakov, the Russian president’s aide, told reporters on Friday. They will discuss various files, most notably the Syrian crisis, and it is expected that Daraa will take a greater part of the discussions due to the worsening situation there.

Muhammad al-Momani, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Jordanian Senate (the second chamber of parliament), told Anadolu Agency that “the upcoming meeting is very important due to the developments in the region and the world that require concerted efforts to prevent it from getting worse.

Momani stressed: “Jordan seeks, through its diplomacy, to actively participate in ending the crises that the region and the world are witnessing, and the expected meeting will resolve many matters, especially at the level of the Syrian crisis.”

Momani believes that “the Syrian file will be strongly present at the table of the king and Putin, given that Russia is closely linked to the Assad regime, and it can play a prominent role in this file.”

It is not excluded that there will be other files, including Iran and Afghanistan, but it is likely that the meeting will end the developments of the Syrian Daraa, and that understandings will be reached with Moscow to ensure that the stability of the Kingdom will not be affected.
