Qatar: We must push for a political solution and move away from the military in Syria
Qatar called for pushing for a political solution in Syria, after the start of the Syrian revolution 10 years ago, noting that “military solutions will not succeed and will only succeed in reaping more suffering and destabilizing security and stability.”
Qatar’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, said, “Those ten years are a dark page in the history of that ancient country, during which the brotherly Syrian people suffered the most severe forms of abuse and human suffering,” as she put it.
This came in a statement she made to the United Nations in New York, in an informal session of the United Nations General Assembly on Syria.
The delegate of Qatar added: “What children bear from the brunt of this crisis is very harsh, as a generation of Syrian children has witnessed untold scourges.”
She explained: “After 10 years have passed since the beginning of the Syrian crisis, it is necessary for us to remember the beginnings of the crisis, as it began with peaceful protests by the Syrian people in front of the whole world, calling for freedom, dignity and social justice, which were unfortunately met with unparalleled brutal repression.”
The representative of Qatar to the United Nations noted, “Since then, the Syrians have paid a heavy price for their demand for these basic rights, and this is their natural right in their legitimate aspirations to live in security, peace and dignity.”
She affirmed, “Qatar adheres to its firm principled position, as it has not wavered from its humanitarian commitment to provide much-needed relief assistance to our Syrian brothers, refugees and displaced persons, which exceeded two billion dollars.”
The Qatari diplomacy stressed: “One of the most serious crimes committed repeatedly in Syria is the use of banned chemical weapons, and not impunity for these violations constitutes a dangerous precedent.”
She added, “Doha supported the efforts of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to Syria in order to reach a solution, through a meaningful political process that leads to a political transition, and the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2254 with all its elements, and that the only way to end the crisis and achieve the political transition and preserve the unity, sovereignty and independence of Syria.”

She concluded that Qatar remains at the forefront of supporting the international, impartial and independent mechanism on Syria, stressing that the crisis in Syria has resulted in dire consequences not only for that country, but also for regional and international peace and security.
