Russia intends to cancel the mechanism of aid delivery into Syria

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in a press conference held yesterday, Saturday, on the sidelines of his participation in the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly, that his country intends to cancel the mechanism for bringing humanitarian aid into Syria across the border.

Lavrov clarified, “that his country will halt supporting the mechanism of humanitarian aid access to Syria in case of continuous freezing of humanitarian aid access through Damascus.”

He added: “if no concrete steps will be taken now to allow humanitarian aid access through Damascus according to the rules of international and humanitarian law, we will halt supporting such non-transparent cross-border matters.

It is noteworthy that the UN Security Council last July unanimously approved a resolution allowing the delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria through the Bab al-Hawa crossing for a period of 12 months, divided into two phases: the first is six months, to be extended at the request of the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
