Sadat Onal: The international community must strive to end the suffering of the Syrian people

“The international community has a joint responsibility to strive to end the tragedy of the Syrians,” said Sadat Onal, the Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister, on Tuesday, in a speech via video message, during his participation in the Brussels Conference of International Donors on Supporting the Future of Syria.

Onal added, “The Syrian tragedy is considered one of the biggest human tragedies in history, during which hundreds of thousands of Syrians were killed, and more than half of the Syrian people were forced to leave their homes.”

He stressed that the Syrians have been living great pains for a long time, and that they are unable to endure this suffering for another ten years, indicating that “the international community bears a joint responsibility to work to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people, and this matter requires concerted and multidimensional efforts that do not meet the urgent needs of the Syrians not only on the ground, but also to seek to address the roots of the problem in Syria.

The Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister said, “The only way to end the suffering of the Syrians is to reach a permanent political solution according to UN Resolution 2254.”

He pointed out that Turkey is working to provide the basic needs of 9 million Syrians, including 3.7 million refugees inside Turkey.

He continued, “We have provided humanitarian aid to the displaced in northern Syria,” calling on the international community to show solidarity and share the burden of refugees with countries neighboring Syria.

Since the start of the Syrian revolution, Turkey, which hosts the largest number of Syrian refugees in the world, has provided all forms of care and services for them, such as education and health, without the slightest discrimination between them and the Turkish citizens.
