The Assad regime issues a decision to put an end to the problem of “similarity of names”

The Assad regime issued a new decision regarding the problem of “similarity of names,” for which the Assad regime forces arrested thousands of Syrians.

The new decision issued by the Assad regime’s Ministry of Justice obligated judges and judicial assistants at judicial departments to complete all personal data related to plaintiffs, defendants, detainees and convicted persons, and in particular their national number.

In its circular, the ministry indicated that the aim of this procedure is to remove any similarity with names and to put a final end to the case of “disagreement of purpose.”

The circular included an emphasis on the Judicial Inspection Department and public defenders to monitor the proper implementation and to inform the Ministry of Justice of any violation that might occur.

Over the past years, thousands of Syrians have been arrested and killed under torture in the prisons of the Assad regime, simply because their names are similar to the names of people wanted for their participation in the Syrian revolution.
