The Israeli Foreign Ministry: We will not allow Iran to use Syria as a means to harm the interests of Tel Aviv

Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi held a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, after their meeting in the Russian capital, Moscow.
Ashkenazi said, “Israel will not allow Iran to use the Syrian file to harm the interests of Tel Aviv.”

He added that his country reserves the right to defend itself, “and will not allow the Iranians to use the Syrian crisis to undermine it,” noting that “they will do everything necessary to protect Israel’s security and vital interests,” as he put it.

For his part, Lavrov stressed, “Russia has hope that the United Nations special envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, will announce the date of the talks in the near future, and that it adheres to the formula based on UN Resolution 2254.”

On Tuesday evening, Israeli warplanes launched a series of successive air strikes targeting the vicinity of Damascus International Airport.

And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had repeatedly threatened to continue to oppose “Iran’s attempts to position itself in Syria.”
