The Security Council discusses the latest developments in the Syrian file
The Security Council announced that the member states will hold a closed session, next Tuesday, to discuss the latest field and political developments in the Syrian file.
This came in a report of the Security Council’s monthly expectations, coinciding with the eighth meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee. The Security Council confirmed that the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, is scheduled to present a briefing on his meeting with the Assad regime’s Foreign Minister, Faisal Miqdad, in Damascus.
According to the report, the developments of the constitutional committee deliberations will be discussed, pointing out that the member states in the council seek to get more details and clarifications.
The report continued: “the amnesty decree recently issued by Assad regime will be discussed including the type of crimes included, the detainees who will be released, the number of released people so far, and whether there are ongoing guarantees of protection for them.”
Concerning the briefing that Geir Pedersen will provide, the report expected that a step-for-step approach will be presented, in addition to details about the concessions that the Assad regime, the Syrian opposition, regional states, and other stakeholders will make, to take reciprocal actions from others.
