The Syrian Opposition Coalition: The Assad regime’s recognition of independence of occupied Ukrainian regions is unacceptable to the Syrians

The Syrian Opposition Coalition said yesterday that the Assad regime’s recognition of Russia’s occupation of Ukrainian regions is unacceptable and rejected by the Syrian people. The Coalition stressed that Assad regime is illegitimate and does not represent the Syrians.

The Coalition issued a statement in which it explained, “The Assad regime’s support for Russian invasion, sending its militias to fight against Ukrainians, and its recognition of Russia’s occupation of Ukrainian regions represent Bashar al-Assad’s submission to the will of Russia’s dictator.

The coalition considered that Ukraine’s decision to cut ties with Assad regime is a step towards the right direction despite its delay. The coalition pointed out that Assad regime with its allies Russia and Iran pose the greatest danger to the international peace and security.

The Coalition called on the international community to work effectively in order to deter Russia and Assad regime, stop their aggression against the civilians, and exclude their representatives from all international forums. The Coalition stressed that the delay to deter them (Russia and Assad regime) will lead to further killings, terrorism, and crises.

The Coalition noted that the international silence on the crimes of Russia and the Assad regime against the Syrian people for years has contributed to repeating the crimes in Ukraine.

The Coalition continued that these crimes may happen in any other country if these criminal forces go unpunished.

On Wednesday, June 29 the Assad regime officially announced the recognition of the independence of the separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as the second member country of the United Nations to recognize the independence of the two regions from Ukraine after Russia.

The Assad regime had previously recognized the independence of Abkhazia and Ossetia from Georgia, in response to the demands of its Russian ally in May 2018.
