The US State Department affirms its commitment to finding a political solution in Syria

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said yesterday, Tuesday, “The Group of Seven (G7) has affirmed its commitment to finding a political solution that ends the conflict in Syria.”

This came against the background of the G7 foreign ministers’ meetings in a tweet to Blinken on Twitter, during which he confirmed that he and his counterparts are committed to finding a political solution to end the conflict in Syria and support the relaunch of the work of the United Nations mechanism for cross-border aid.

Blinken added, “We will continue to work on repeating all provisions of Resolution 2254 of the United Nations Security Council and ending the suffering of Syrians.”

Resolution 2254 issued on December 18, 2015 provides for the immediate cessation by all parties of launching attacks on civilian targets in Syria, and urges members of the Security Council to support efforts to achieve a ceasefire.

The resolution also requests the United Nations to bring the parties together to enter into formal negotiations and hold free and fair elections under the auspices of the world organization, with the aim of implementing a political transition process.
