Turkey: Development of the “Berry” system for the first Turkish aircraft carrier

The Turkish company “Aselsan” for defense industries has developed the “Berry” infrared search and tracking system, to be used on the “TGGi Anadolu”, the first aircraft carrier ship built with indigenous capabilities.

According to Anadolu Agency, the acceptance tests for the aforementioned system were successfully completed yesterday, Sunday, at a facility belonging to the company in the presence of officials from “Aselsan”, the Turkish Defense Industries Presidency, and the Turkish “Sadaf” company, which manufactured the local multi-purpose ship.

TGGi Anadolu, the service in the ranks of the Turkish Navy, is expected to enter the service, as the Berry system will be one of the most important systems equipped with the ship. The system provides continuous protection for the ship against threats, and it can work in all environmental and light conditions.

“Berry” can follow 150 targets at the same time, and work continuously, whether during the course of the ship or anchoring in the ports.

It is reported that the Turkish multi-purpose amphibious assault ship “TGGi Anadolu” is 231 meters long and 32 meters wide, with a full payload of 27 thousand tons, and it will be the first aircraft carrier manufactured with local capabilities.

The Turkish company “Aselsan” for defense industries also completed the qualification tests for the launch control system, which it had created to develop the Turkish “Buran” gun. Aselsan moved to the stage of serial production of the launch system, after completing its qualifying tests.

The aforementioned “Aselsan” system provides the ability to carry out artillery launch preparations, and manage them via its own computer, as well as the ability to measure velocity via radar.

The launch system has been equipped with features that enable the cannon to launch and target day and night, and to measure the distance of the target by laser, all of which is in harmony with other systems in the cannon.
The Turkish “Buran” gun was manufactured as part of the development of a lightweight airborne cannon, while Aselsan took over the task of developing its own launch system.

The Buran gun has an estimated range of 17 kilometers, and its weight with the launch control system is 1,710 kilograms, making it easy to transport it on board helicopters and all light vehicles.

Khaleuk Bayraktar, Chairman of the Administrative Board of the “Istanbul Square” association specialized in the defense and space industries, said that the percentage of domestic defense industries in Turkey has reached 70 percent during the past 20 years.

He pointed out that the domestic defense industries projects in Turkey will gain momentum during 2021, driven by the US sanctions imposed on Ankara because of its purchase of the “S-400” air defense system from Russia.
