Turkish airspace closed to Russian planes carrying soldiers to Syria

Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, said on Saturday: “Turkish airspace has been closed to military and civilian planes carrying troops from Russia to Syria after consultations with Moscow, according to Turkey’s state broadcaster TRT Haber.

He announced this to reporters on a plane carrying him to Uruguay. He also said ” we closed airspace to Russia’s military planes and even to civilian planes heading to Syria”. We gave them a three month permission which expired in April.

He added that he informed his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, about this decision which he communicated to President Putin. He clarified that the flight ban will last for 3 months. Russia didn’t immediately respond to Turkish announcement. Ankara is seeking to hold a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
