Pedersen: The situation in Syria is extremely difficult and things are going in the wrong direction

UN special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, said: “The situation in Syria is extremely difficult and all things are going in the wrong direction, when it comes to security, the economy, or the political process.”

Pedersen’s statement came after his meeting with the Foreign Minister of the Assad regime, Faisal Al-Mekdad, in Damascus.

Pedersen added: “It is necessary to continue the discussions of the Constitutional Committee in Geneva, expressing his hope that the repercussions of the war in Gaza will not spread to Syria.”

Pedersen pointed out: “The main international parties must support the efforts of the United Nations as a facilitator and refrain from interfering in the place where the Syrians meet.”

Pedersen’s visit to Damascus comes after he said in a briefing to the Security Council at the end of last February: “Moscow announced that it no longer considers Switzerland a neutral place.”

The Assad regime’s Foreign Ministry had previously announced a meeting between Al-Mekdad and Pedersen to discuss the cooperation between Syria and the United Nations.
