US Embassy in Syria: Assad regime is corrupt and has been a source of regional instability

US Embassy in Syria tweeted: “Assad regime is corrupt and has been a source of regional instability.”

US Embassy’s statement came on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of Bashar al-Assad assuming power on July 10, 2000.

The US Embassy added that “Assad regime committed grave atrocities against its people and created a dire humanitarian crisis due to corruption and economic mismanagement.”

The US Embassy confirmed that “Washington will continue to shed light on human rights violations throughout Syria, it will also act on boosting accountability for those are responsible.”

The United States, the European Union, and the majority of Arab countries called on Bashar al-Assad to step down after his involvement in repression, war crimes, and human rights violations following the Syrian revolution, in March 2011.

It is noteworthy that Bashar al-Assad assumed power in Syria on July 10, 2000, following the death of his father, Hafez al-Assad, who ruled the country with an iron fist for more than 30 years, after rapid constitutional amendments reduced the minimum age for the president from 40 to 34 years, allowing Bashar Assad assumes the presidency.
