The European Union condemns the targeting of Al-Shifa Hospital in Afrin

In a statement issued by the Office of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, the European Union condemned the targeting of Shifa Hospital in the city of Afrin in northern Syria, without referring to the perpetrators of the attack.

Josep Borrell said: “The European Union condemns the June 12 attack on Al-Shifa Hospital in Afrin, northern Syria, which resulted in the death of many civilians, including medical staff and patients.”

The statement explained that the attack is a clear violation of international humanitarian law, expressing its condolences to the families of the victims, without addressing the perpetrators of the terrorist attack.

A statement issued by the French Foreign Ministry stated that Paris strongly condemns the attack on Al-Shifa Hospital in Afrin, which resulted in the death of many civilians, including medical staff.

The Ministry expressed its condolences to the families of the victims, stressing the need to protect health care facilities and workers in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2286.

“Hospitals, civilians and aid workers are not targets,” the office of the British Special Representative for Syria said in a statement via Twitter.

He continued: “Britain calls for calm in northern Syria and urges all parties to abide by the existing ceasefire agreements.”

Last Saturday, the Syrian Democratic Forces targeted the city of Afrin with rocket-propelled grenades, which led to the death of more than 19 civilians, including medical staff, and more than 60 injuries, in addition to the out of service of Al-Shifa Hospital, due to its direct targeting.
