“Human Rights Watch”: The United Nations should establish a body to reveal the fate of missing people in Syria
Human Rights Watch and 102 Syrian and international organizations urged the member states of the United Nations to vote in order to establish a humanitarian body that seeks to reveal the fate of the missing persons in Syria.
The United Nations director at Human Rights Watch, Louis Charbonneau, said in a statement to the organization that “the families who are trying hard to know the fate of their missing persons in Syria are the one who created the idea of establishing a humanitarian institution concerned with finding out what happened to their missing loved ones.”
Charbonneau added that “establishing this new UN institution will be a significant step towards providing long-awaited answers to countless Syrian families who have long suffered loss and uncertainty.”
Charbonneau pointed out that “UN member states should support establishing this body in the General Assembly vote, as well as ensuring that it is fully funded from the UN’s regular budget, and that it has all the support and resources necessary to perform its mission.”
It is noteworthy that the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) estimates that the number of detainees in Syria has exceeded 155,000 since 2011, including about 112,000 cases of enforced disappearance, until August 2022, the vast majority of them are held by the Assad regime.
