UN: Independent Institution on Missing Persons in Syria is a landmark step forward

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, considered that establishing the UN Independent Institution on Missing persons (IIMP) in Syria is a landmark step forward.

Türk said during a briefing at the UN General Assembly that establishing the (IIMP) will help to alleviate the suffering of people on all sides and meet their profound needs to know what has happened to their loved ones.

Türk clarified that the (IIMP) will support reconciliation, justice, and peace in Syria. It will also support all the victims as it will search for the missing on all sides regardless of their political affiliations.

Türk pointed out that the General Assembly approved the budget, while the work is underway to prepare the papers of the main issues such as designing and implementing the search plans and participate the victims in addition to supporting the victims and survivors.

Türk called on all states and all parties to the conflict in Syria to fully cooperate with the Independent Institution, so it can fulfil its mandate, pointing out that the conflict in Syria is an open wound for millions of Syrian people who want to know the fate of their missing loved ones.
