French Foreign Ministry: Holding Assad regime accountable is a main condition for resolving the crisis in Syria

France expressed its concerns over the regional movements of normalization with the Assad regime, pointing out that its attitude towards the Syrian file is consistent since 2011.

French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Catherine Colonna, said in a message to the coalition that she does not see any reason for restoring ties with the Assad regime, as the regime does not give any signs of engagement with good faith concerning the political process in accordance with the UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

Colonna pointed out that the prevention of going unpunished is irreplaceable condition for any political solution. Colonna added that implementing the international resolutions related to Syria will allow the Syrians to live safely and peacefully in their country.

Colonna emphasized her country’s support for non-government organizations, the international mechanism, and the national trials, that seek to hold the responsible of crimes accountable in Syria.

Colonna made it clear that her country is interested in the Captagon smuggling file as the Assad regime is responsible for trafficking the Captagon, pointing out the Foreign Affairs Council has adopted new sanctions against many entities responsible for Captagon smuggling in Syria.

Colonna confirmed that her country stands by all Syrians outside and inside the country, following the 7th Brussels Conference, as it has pledged 540 million euros, including 190 million for 2023.
