On the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day, Erdogan demandS to stop Islamophobia

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today, Wednesday, in a statement: “The time has come to say stop Islamophobia and xenophobia, which has escalated in recent years with the influence of digital platforms and the media,” he said.

Erdogan added that the international community must act in order not to repeat some tragedies such as the Holocaust, and those that occurred in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Cambodia.

He noted, “There is a significant escalation in violence against places of worship of all kinds, including mosques, churches and synagogues, as well as an increase in hate crimes and racial discrimination.”

He pointed out that racial terrorism has become a serious threat to social peace and the will to coexistence.

He added that the last century showed the scale of the tragedies caused by racist ideologies, noting that the signs of massacres such as the Holocaust, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Rwanda and Cambodia were evident prior to their commission, through racism, marginalization and systematic hate speech.

He stated that each of these massacres are vivid examples reminding the international community of its responsibilities, stressing that combating hate speech does not fall on the shoulders of the victim only, but on all of humanity.

Erdogan stressed that his country would follow an open-door policy, and receive all refugees to its lands, without any distinction between their religion, language or ethnicity.

The 27 January of each year coincides with the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, according to a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, and Turkey was among the countries that submitted the draft resolution in 2005.
