Turkish Foreign Ministry: The international community can’t consider the presidential elections in Syria legitimate

The Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed its objection to the presidential elections in Syria, scheduled for next May 26, and said: “It cannot be considered legitimate by the international community,” at a time when most Western countries, America and the regions of northern Syria reject these elections and consider them a farce.

The official representative of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Tango Bilecic, confirmed, in a statement, today, Friday, that “the presidential elections, which were announced by the Assad regime on May 26, 2021, contradict the standards of the Road Map, which was put forward by UN Security Council Resolution 2254.”

He added, “The elections that deprived nearly 7 million Syrians of the right to vote, far from freedom and fairness, can’t be considered legitimate by the international community.

Stefan Diujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, confirmed that the presidential elections that the Assad regime intends to hold in Syria are not part of the political process stipulated in Security Council Resolution 2254.

Both the head of the National Coalition and the head of the Syrian Interim Government considered that the presidential elections that the Assad regime intends to take place next May are illegal and a farce, calling on the international community to assume its responsibilities to push the Assad regime to engage in the political solution.
