American magazine: What is happening in Daraa is an opportunity to end Assad’s rule and an entrance to the political transition

The American “National Interest” magazine considered that what is happening in Daraa Governorate may constitute an entry point for the political transition in Syria, and the departure of Bashar al-Assad.

A report for the magazine entitled “The Siege of Daraa is an Opportunity to End Assad’s Rule,” said that Daraa plays a critical geopolitical role in Syria, and is a major corridor of the main trade routes for Syria, noting that the siege of the Assad regime forces has exacerbated the humanitarian situation in Daraa.

The report stressed that the recent escalation in Daraa by the Assad regime forces represents an opportunity for the administration of US President Joe Biden to pressure Assad and his allies to negotiate the future of Syria.

The report pointed out that the continuation of the uprising in Daraa, and the people’s failure to comply with the regime’s orders, despite the heavy human losses, represent the starting point for Washington and its allies to undertake a diplomatic initiative to end the humanitarian crisis in Syria.

The report added that it is necessary for Washington and its allies to invite the Assad regime to the negotiating table, and to insist on compensating the millions of Syrians who have suffered from the humanitarian crisis.

The report concluded by saying that southern Syria in general and Daraa in particular represent a gateway to the political transition in Syria. The Syrian revolution started from Daraa, and it would be fair for the Assad regime to leave through the recent Daraa uprising.
