Bill Hagerty: The US Senate approves the US embassy in Jerusalem
On Friday, the US Senate approved the stay of the US embassy in Jerusalem.
Senator Bill Hagerty said in a statement to the media, that the U.S. Senate “adopted by 97 votes to 3 an amendment presented by his Republican colleague Jim Einhoff.”
Hagerty confirmed that the Senate approved an amendment to the budget resolution, which would make the US embassy in Jerusalem permanent, and this effectively precluded its demotion or transfer from the capital of Israel, Jerusalem.
Former US President Donald Trump moved the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2008 after recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel at the end of 2007.
“The Trump administration has fulfilled its promise to move the American embassy to Jerusalem, the eternal and indivisible capital of the Jewish state of Israel, and it must remain there,” said Senator Hagerty.
For his part, Senator Einhoff said, in the same written statement, “Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and I am proud to pass legislation to protect the US embassy from relocation or downgrading.”
The United Nations’ decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel was condemned by the Arab countries and the international community, and they considered this procedure a cause for unrest in a volatile region, and the Palestinians said that Washington is giving up its leadership role as a mediator for peace.
