Human rights organizations hold Bashar al-Assad responsible for international sanctions on Syria

In a joint statement, 14 Syrian non-governmental organizations called on Bashar al-Assad to take immediate action to end the Syrian sanctions programs, and held him responsible for imposing sanctions for his refusal to engage in any meaningful political process.

The statement held Bashar Al-Assad fully responsible, as he holds the keys to lifting sanctions on the Syrians, if he engages in a real political process in accordance with the international frameworks agreed upon in Security Council Resolution 2254, and deals seriously with the Special Envoy to Syria, to achieve a peaceful end to the conflict.

The statement stated that the penalties are accompanied by clear messages specifying ways to end them, by stopping violating human rights and submitting to true justice requirements, instead of “obstructing relief, bombing schools and hospitals, and detaining and arresting citizens.”

The organizations addressed their message in the joint statement, addressing Bashar al-Assad, saying: “Stop violating human rights, submit to true justice requirements, and engage in the political process under the supervision of the United Nations to put an end to sanctions programs.”

The statement was signed by the Syrian Network for Human Rights, Families for Freedom, the Syrian British Council, the Syrian American Council, alternatives, the Political Action Committee: Free Syria, Americans for a Free Syria, Our House, the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression, With Justice, Syrians,
Christians for Peace, Citizens of a Safe and Reassuring America, the Syrian Institute for Progress, the Syrian Legal Development Program.
