Newspaper: Washington is seeking other goals through its “insufficient” moves in Syria
The Washington Post said, “While the US government is stagnant, the situation on the ground in Syria is deteriorating to the benefit of Moscow, Tehran and the Assad regime.”
The newspaper pointed out in a report that Biden is still trying to come up with a new strategy to address the “terrifying conflict” that has afflicted Syria since 2011, despite the passage of more than six months since he took office.
The newspaper pointed out that the American moves in the Syrian file are “insufficient,” the latest of which was reaching an agreement with Russia on extending the mechanism for bringing in UN aid into northwest Syria, in addition to imposing a new package of sanctions on the notorious prisons in Syria.
The newspaper noted that Washington is seeking, through its recent moves, towards other goals, far from the United States’ leadership of international efforts to protect civilians once again, and to propose an actual political solution to the conflict.
The newspaper quoted a senior (unnamed) US administration official as saying: “Our policy toward the Assad regime has not changed, as we have the same concerns about losing legitimacy there… but we believe that we should focus first on alleviating human suffering… and then dealing with Our partners and with the United Nations are in pursuit of a political solution, and we also have a policy review that is still in full swing with regard to arranging all these matters.”
It stressed that the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, should appoint a special envoy in Syria, and this envoy must be a high-ranking diplomat in order to manage this file and activate the diplomatic role, and stressed the need for Biden to announce that Assad cannot return to the arms of the international community or to enjoy his bounties.
