Pederson: The presidential elections to be held in Syria do not concern us

The UN special envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, said yesterday, Tuesday, “The Syrian presidential elections scheduled for the end of May do not concern us, because they are not part of my mission under International Resolution 2254, which talks about elections under a new constitution, which will be conducted according to the highest international standards.

With the participation of the diaspora ”.
This came during an interview with Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper about developments in the Syrian file.

Pederson added, “The Syrian tragedy continued for a long time, during the convergence of the two world wars, as the Syrians fell into the trap of an endless war, and we must all feel ashamed for not stopping it.”

He explained that there are new factors that call for believing in the possibility of moving towards several solutions, namely: relative calm on the ground, the economic crisis in all regions of Syria, and the conviction that none of the government of the Assad regime, the Syrian opposition, Astana group, or America, alone is not able to monopolize the solution,
And that the end will have to be negotiated a “political settlement.”

The UN special envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, had previously confirmed that the world had failed to help the Syrian people, referring to “the extent of the suffering suffered by the Syrians in terms of injustice, poverty, death and violations,” in a speech before the Security Council via “video coverage” technology on the developments of the Syrian issue,
Which coincides with the tenth anniversary of the start of the Syrian revolution.
