The Norwegian Refugee Council warns of a new displacement of Syrians due to deteriorating living and security conditions
The Norwegian Refugee Council warned in a report, today, Monday, of an additional displacement of six million Syrians, as long as the living conditions deteriorate, insecurity and the war in Syria continues.
The report stated that the displacement figures for the year 2020 indicate that the average displacement of Syrians inside and outside the country is estimated at 2.4 million cases of displacement, amid increasing poverty rates and decreasing opportunities to search for safety and rebuild life.
The report pointed out that the number of returnees to Syria in 2020 was only about 467 thousand, while about one million and 800 thousand people were displaced within the borders of the country, which means that every person who managed to return was displaced against four other people.
“This was a decade of shame on humanity, the cruel indifference towards millions of Syrian children, mothers and fathers who were deprived of their homes and their lives is a firm condemnation of the parties and sponsors of this cruel war and the entire international community,” said NRC Secretary General Jan Egeland.
Egeland called for the support of millions of Syrians and urgent measures to avoid “a contract that could bring suffering and displace millions of others,” considering that economic hardship might become the main factor driving towards displacement, and called for the necessity of a ceasefire and the pursuit of a political settlement, and limiting the Syrians, internally displaced persons and refugees, To go home.
The report of the Norwegian Refugee Council indicated the loss of the overwhelming majority of displaced Syrians in the regions of the Middle East, hoping to return to their homes in the next five to ten years, while a few of them expressed their fear of returning to their homes and the difficulties of securing their families’ sustenance and paying the rent and medical expenses.
