The US Congress calls on Biden to develop a new and clear strategy in Syria

Members of the US Congress called on President Joe Biden’s administration to develop a new and clear strategy in Syria as soon as possible, and to implement the provisions of the “Caesar Act” firmly to escalate pressure on the Assad regime and its allies.

The Chairman of the Committee, Democratic Representative Ted Deutsch, said in a hearing held by the Middle East and South Asia Subcommittee, that Congress will seek to implement all the provisions of the “Caesar” bill, adding, “We are in a position of strength to put pressure on the Assad regime and reach a diplomatic solution to the crisis.”

Deutsch drew harsh criticism of the Assad regime and its efforts to “erase Idlib from existence,” noting that the conflict in Syria helped Iran expand its influence and helped Russia extend its control as a major player in the region.

He stressed the need to work for the release of the Americans detained in Syria, specifically the American journalist Austin Tice, and the Syrian-American doctor Majid Kam al-Maz, adding that “Congress has not forgotten the Syrian people.”

In the hearing entitled “10 Years of War: Looking into the Continuing Conflict in Syria,” Representative Joe Wilson, the top Republican on the committee, said that the Assad regime is illegal, stressing that there is no solution to the crisis in Syria as long as Bashar al-Assad remains in office.

Wilson called on the US administration to adopt a different approach, because all the attempts that sought to reach a solution in cooperation with Russia and Iran were dismal, as he put it.
