The US Embassy in Syria condemns the military escalation in Idlib Governorate

The US Embassy in Syria issued a statement commenting on the military escalation in Idlib governorate, by the forces of the Assad regime and Russia.

“These attacks on civilians, health workers and first responders in northwest Syria must end, and the ceasefire must be respected,” the embassy said in its statement, which was posted on Twitter today, Monday.

The ministry added that last Saturday, several villages and towns in Idlib were subjected to intense air and artillery bombardment by the forces of the Assad regime and Russia, killing at least eight civilians, most of them were children.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) called for the protection of children, after documenting the killing of six children and the injury of others in several attacks targeting three villages south of Idlib, last Saturday.

“These attacks are the worst since March 2020,” the organization’s regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, Ted Chaiban, said in a statement.

He added, “These attacks are the worst since the ceasefire agreement was reached in the region in March of last year. The escalation of violence will only lead to the loss of more children’s lives.”

About two months ago, the forces of the Assad regime and Russia began an escalation of shelling on the villages and towns of the southern countryside of Idlib.

This escalation comes during the preparations of the “guarantor states” (Turkey, Iran, Russia) to hold the 16th round of the “Astana” talks.
